"My Name Is Earl"

Jason Lee. He can be very funny and likable, but he can also suck the life out of a movie like nobody's business. He makes a fine lowlife/slacker but is a terrible romantic interest. As Earl, he's plays a lowlife/slacker who's trying to turn his life around.

The pilot was funny enough for me to continue checking out the show. Sporting a porn star chic mustache and a few extra pounds, Jason Lee is the perfect fit for the role of lovable loser. The supporting cast seems well done with Jamie Pressly as his ex-wife and a much slimmed down Ethan Suplee as his brother. There's a Family Guy/early Simpsons feel to the flashbacks, which is funny if not all that original.

The high concept premise is a good creative foundation for a serial sitcom. Earl has done a lot of bad things in his life and in an effort to change his bad karma, he's attempting to do good things to make up for the damage he's caused. Hilarity ensues. With a list of almost 300 bad things he's done, there are a lot of possibilities for plots.

I just hope they stick with the lowlife persona and not try to complicate/ruin things with a love interest, cause like I said he sucks at that, and when I say sucks, I mean Tom Cruise dating/brainwashing your sister bad. I know it's old news, but that Tom Cruise sure is crazy. The built in love interest is a lazy and unpleasant maid named Catalina. Of course there is zero chemistry between them. So far Earl's brother "has dibs" on her, but i see disaster on the horizon. Aside from being eye candy, she's obviously there to romance earl in the near future. Ugh.

  • Just wanted to thank you for your kind words on my site (1strongopinion), and let you know I'll be checking your site as well. I'm not a pro journalist, although I have taken some classes. I am a screenwriter with Industry connections. That's how I get into some screenings in advance. Plus my friend went to the Toronto Film Festival and sent me reviews.
A special thanks to your suggestions of wwtdd and idontlikeyouinthatway. You'll see I changed my links.
